Insider Tip: If you’ve ever wanted to experience what it’s like to be a sommelier, hop on the Blind Taste Like a Somm experience. In this interactive wine tasting workshop, you’ll learn how color, aromatics, structure, and grape markers can identify which wine varietal you are drinking.

Insider Tip: Make an appointment at the winery, located at the bottom of Howell Mountain, to sample these exclusive wines for yourself. The experience pairs an educational vineyard tour with a selection of Lithology’s finest wines, allowing you to fully explore what this brand is all about.

Also worthy of a stop is HALL Wines St. Helena, where a dedication to beauty shows in everything from the wine to the extensive artwork and sculptures throughout the property, and Trinchero, which has been crafting wine since 1948. Established as an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1993, the Spring Mountain District is defined by its unique blend of sedimentary and volcanic rocky soils, varied terrain, high elevation, and cool, wet climate. Home to approximately 1,000 acres of vineyards, this AVA is most widely planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but you’ll also find Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, and Zinfandel grapes. Wines from this distinct part of Napa Valley are noted for their depth and complexity, balanced tannins, and age-worthiness.

Though just a few miles from downtown St. Helena, the area’s winding roads and lush forests impart a sense of secluded serenity. Its wineries, which are tucked off the road and hidden away from view, add to the allure, making a visit here feel like a discovery of Napa’s best kept secret. Ready to explore Spring Mountain? Here are nine wineries you won’t want to miss.

Now, under new ownership, Stony Hill welcomes guests to its serene property for tastings at the redesigned residence, which boasts a chic, mid century modern aesthetic. Outside, the relaxed setting of the stone patio will find you savoring pristine views of Napa Valley while you taste. Stony Hill continues to honor its heritage by crafting old-world style wines, from Syrah to Riesling to Cabernet, but it’s the precise, minerally Chardonnays that helped it earn praise as “America’s greatest white wine estate.”

Though the sprawling estate was at one time three separate properties (each with their own vineyard and winery), Spring Mountain Vineyard now comprises 845 acres, with 226 acres under vine. One might think that it would be easy to taste wine in Napa Valley at almost all hours of the day, but while there are lots of bars and restaurants that offer excellent wines by the glass and bottle, “last call” for tours and wine tastings at most Napa wineries is well before the sun sets over the vineyards.

Still, if you’re not much of a daytime drinker or are looking to keep tasting Napa Valley wines into the late afternoon/early evening, there are a few excellent wineries and tasting rooms where you can snag a reservation (or even walk in) until at least 5:30 p.m., including one that’s open until midnight.

Please note that hours of operation are subject to change and it’s always a good idea to check with the winery before visiting. Additionally, some wineries may have limited hours during certain seasons or days of the week.

Known as “Napa Valley’s Main Street,” many consider St. Helena to be the heart of the region. It has a rich history of California winemaking dating back to the 1800s and boasts Napa Valley’s first commercial winery, Charles Krug, not to mention dozens of charming shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Most importantly, St. Helena is home to many iconic and boutique wineries that will make any trip to Napa Valley complete. To help you navigate all that this region has to offer, we have created a two-day wine tasting itinerary that will take you through eight great wineries in St. Helena.

Day One

Heitz Cellar

The Salon – 436 St. Helena Highway, St. Helena, CA 94574
The Estate – 500 Taplin Road, St. Helena CA 94574, (707) 963-2047

Reservations: Required

Kick off your trip to St. Helena with a visit to Heitz Cellar, where history and luxury come together. The 19th century winery’s legacy runs deep, as it is home to sprawling vineyards that produced the very first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa. Visit their Salon, right in the heart of St. Helena, for the Cabernet-focused Heritage Experience, or venture to the Estate, founded in the late 1800s, to further delve into the rich history of the property. Either way, you’re in for a treat.

Insider Tip: If you’re keen on touring the 19th century estate, book either the Spring Valley Experience or The Vineyard to Bottle Experience. These both include tours through the historic estate, as well as the historic Stone Cellar.

Louis M. Martini Winery
Martini Park, Photo Courtesy of Louis M. Martini Winery

254 St. Helena Highway, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 968-3362

Reservations: Required

This iconic property recently completed restoration of their historic winery, originally built in 1933 and among the first to open after the repeal of Prohibition. Famous for their Cabernet Sauvignon, Louis M. Martini Winery no doubt played a significant role in putting Napa Cabernet on the map. The winery offers tastings in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings. Choose from a flight of seasonal wines that change every three months, in-depth library tastings, or selections of Louis M. Martini’s most popular wines, paired with local delicacies.

Insider Tip: For true indulgence, reserve a spot at the Underground Cellar Experience, which—as you might have guessed—takes place in the winery’s historic underground cellar and features small-lot wine releases served with curated pairings from Chef Aaron Meneghelli.

Clif Family Winery
Photo Courtesy of Clif Family Winery

Refugio Tasting Room – 709 Main Street, St. Helena, CA 94574
Enoteca Tasting Room – 1334 Vidovich Lane, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 968-0625

Reservations: Not required at the Rifugio Tasting Room, required at the Enoteca Tasting Room

If the name sounds familiar, we wouldn’t be surprised. The very family who started Clif Bar used that same ingenuity and love of food to found Clif Family Winery. Clif Family Winery has two different tasting rooms, one that welcomes walk-ins and one that is reserved for private tasting experiences. The Refugio Tasting Room has a laid-back atmosphere and focuses on wine and food pairings, like the King of the Mountain Tasting, which pairs four bites with four Howell Mountain Wines. The Enoteca Tasting Room is reserved for private tastings, like the Estate Tasting Experience, which highlights the winery’s small-production wines.

Insider Tip: Check out the Clif Family Bruschetteria Food Truck. The truck is typically parked in the heart of St. Helena, just outside their Refugio Tasting Room. The fun menu includes various bruschettas like the Funghi or B.L.T, along with delectable appetizers like polenta tots, always using fresh, CCOF-certified organic and seasonal produce from the Clif Family Farms.

Merryvale Vineyards

1000 Main Street, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 963-7777

Reservations: Required for some experiences

Family-owned and operated, Merryvale Vineyards’ historic building was the first winery built in Napa Valley following the repeal of Prohibition. This rich history shows in the winery’s stunning gardens, barrel rooms, and vineyards. Its proprietors, the Schlatter family, and winemaker Andrew Wright, focus on Bordeaux varieties, employing thoughtful farming and winery practices to ensure the wines are world-class and reflective of Napa Valley terroir. To that end, Merryvale Vineyards is Napa Green Land and Napa Green Winery certified.

Insider Tip: Want a little cheese with that wine? Book the Artisanal Wine & Cheese Tasting for a semi-private, guided tasting experience that pairs Merryvale wines with locally sourced cheeses.

Day Two

Fantesca Estate & Winery
Photo Courtesy of Fantesca Estate & Winery

2920 Spring Mountain Road, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 968-9229

Reservations: Required

This property was originally the dowry of Caroline Bale for her marriage to Charles Krug in the mid-1800s. Current owners Susan and Duane Hoff wanted to recognize this rich heritage when they purchased it, naming it after a clever and strong-willed lead female character from the Italian Commedia dell’Arte, which was the inspiration for Cirque du Soleil. The winery is now known for small-production, award-winning wines produced by winemaker Heidi Barrett in a stunning setting that includes a 300-foot Spring Mountain cave, sprawling vineyard views, and luxurious wine experiences. Trust us, it’s beautiful.

Insider Tip: Got a favorite quote (yours or someone else’s)? Submit it to be considered as a “Fortune Corkie” and printed on one of Fantesca’s wine corks.

Beringer

2000 Main Street, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 257-5771

Reservations: Not required but recommended

Jacob Beringer and his brother Frederick came to Napa from Mainz, Germany, ultimately purchasing 215 acres in 1875, which would become home to what is now California’s oldest continuously operated winery. Beringer would build on this tradition of industry “firsts,” becoming the first to give public tours in 1934, and the first and only winery to have both a red and a white wine named #1 Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator. Be sure to visit the iconic Rhine House mansion for its stunning stained-glass windows and architecture while sipping reserve and single-vineyard wines.

Insider Tip: For $30, take the Legacy Cave Tour, where you will sip a selection of wines as your guide leads you through the Old Winery and historic tunnels while sharing details of Beringer’s rich history and commitment to quality.

Markham Vineyards

2182 St. Helena Highway N, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 963-5292

Reservations: Required

This longstanding winery got its start with the dawn of winemaking in Napa Valley. The original builder of Markham’s iconic Stone Cellar came to Napa from Bordeaux, initially arriving with other Gold Rush pioneers. Instead of gold the winemaker discovered Napa’s rich soil, perfect for growing wine grapes, and utilized his skills in viticulture to become one of the largest producers prior to Prohibition. After recently undergoing a makeover, Markham’s tasting room is an even more beautiful space to sample the winery’s renowned Merlots. We particularly love the Best of Napa Valley Merlot Tasting, which includes samplings of small lot and limited-production Merlots, showcasing how these wines can differ vastly depending on climate, soil, and elevation.

Insider Tip: If you happen to be in town for one of Markham Vineyards’ events, be sure to snag tickets! All of the winery’s events take place in the historic Stone Cellar, featuring floor-to-ceiling wine barrels and a beautiful stone interior. Events include everything from dinners with renowned chefs to craft classes like wreath making.

Trinchero Napa Valley
Photo Courtesy of Trinchero Napa Valley

3070 N St. Helena Highway, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 963-1160

Reservations: Required for all tastings

Trinchero Winery has been family-owned and operated since 1948. They offer several tasting and experience options in their modern and airy tasting room with bright white furniture and large windows. We’d suggest reserving a spot on the Winemaker’s Selection Tasting to try a selection of current release wines, and a dessert wine, paired with Executive Chef James Houghton’s personal cheese selections.

Insider Tip: If you’re interested in learning how soil, climate, elevation, and sun exposure can influence what’s in your glass, sign up for the Taste of Terroir experience, which features a horizontal tasting of four single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon wines from St. Helena, Atlas Peak, and Mt. Veeder appellations.

One could visit Napa Valley and never leave the town of St. Helena. Known for world-class wineries, an exciting culinary scene, independent shops and galleries, intimate hotels, and gorgeous vistas, St. Helena is at once modern and charming, offering a small-town vibe with big city hospitality and amenities.

In addition to its rich history and reputation as “Napa Valley’s Main Street,” St. Helena is home to some of California’s best wineries. From boutique, small-production facilities to state-of-the-art, iconic properties, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite must-visit spots when wine tasting in St. Helena.

Markham Vineyards

2812 St. Helena Highway North, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 963-5292

Markham Vineyards

Venture to the stately, renovated 19th-century stone cellar and tasting room at the heart of Markham Vineyards, an historic architectural landmark in the greater Napa Valley. Here you’ll sample world-class Bordeaux varietals either indoors, in a classic seated tasting environment with midcentury furnishings, or outdoors, near the Koi ponds and under the olive trees on Markham’s garden patio. Markham Vineyards has been sustainably producing an impressive portfolio of wines for more than 45 years now, but they’re perhaps best known for their single-vineyard Merlot. Notice the cannoneer illustration on every bottle? Legend has it that namesake and US Navy veteran, Bruce Markham, would mark the start of each harvest by firing his cannon in the vineyards.

Merryvale Winery

1000 Main Street, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 963-2225

Merryvale Winery
Merryvale Winery, Photo Courtesy of Merryvale

As the first winery built in Napa Valley after the repeal of Prohibition, Merryvale Vineyards produces exceptional wines from Bordeaux varieties uniquely expressed through classic Napa Valley terroir. Select from several unique wine experiences at Merryvale: the Profile Estate Picnic that kicks off 800 feet above the valley floor, the Burger Butler that includes hand-delivery of your pre-ordered burger from the beloved Gott’s Roadside, and the hands-on blending lab that can accommodate groups from 12 to more than 100.

Conn Creek Winery

8711 Silverado Trail, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 963-9100

Conn Creek
Conn Creek Winery, Photo Courtesy of Conn Creek

Sustainability is at the core of Conn Creek’s identity. Founded in 1973, this Napa Green-certified winery specializing in Bordeaux-varietal-based red wines was the first “green,” energy-efficient winery building in Napa Valley. Today, the Mediterranean-style winery offers classic and interactive wine experiences, including the “Barrel Blending Experience®,” in which guests become winemaker for a day. After tasting through barrel samples of Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals from select Napa Valley sub-appellations, they create a custom wine blend of their own to take home.

Heitz Cellar

436 St. Helena Highway, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 963-2047

Heitz Cellar

The gorgeous Heitz Cellar Estate has been an institution in eastern St. Helena since the 1800s. This very winery produced the first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa and specializes in Napa Cab to this day with its acclaimed Martha’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. Guests can get a glimpse of the original Heitz Cellar Estate on their Vineyard to Bottle Experience. You’ll be collected from your Napa hotel in a brand new Lexus before taking a tour of their organically farmed vineyards, biodynamic winemaking process, and the iconic Stone Cellar. The experience also includes a stop at The Salon, featuring library and current selection vintages paired with cheese and charcuterie from their very own larder.

Charles Krug Winery

2800 Main Street, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 967-2229

Charles Krug
Charles Krug, Photo Courtesy of Charles Krug

Today, Charles Krug Winery is a beautifully designed, world-class center for hospitality and wine tourism. Every detail, from carefully crafted tasting experiences to the feel and functionality of the property, are timeless yet modern, setting the standard for Wine Country travel today. Guests will fall in love with the winery’s endless stories at every turn, not to mention the rich portfolio of wines that express all that Napa Valley’s diverse terroir has to offer.

HALL Napa Valley

HALL Napa Valley produces Cabernet Sauvignon with fruit from nine estate vineyards, of which five are California Certified Organic Farming (CCOF). Both tasting room locations (St. Helena and Rutherford) boast a collection of modern art with pieces from some of the world’s most renowned contemporary artists. At their St. Helena tasting room, enjoy carefully curated experiences like the signature HALLmark Tour and Tasting, which takes guests on a stroll around the grounds, and concludes with a tasting in one the winery’s private salons, or the Cabernet Collector’s Experience, in which the winery’s most experienced wine educators guide guests through the terroir and techniques that go into crafting HALL’s rare and highly allocated Cabernet Sauvignons.

Fantesca Estate Winery

2920 Spring Mountain Road, St. Helena, CA 94574, (707) 968-9229

Originally the dowry of Caroline Bale for her marriage to Charles Krug in the mid-1800s, Fantesca is now owned by college sweethearts Susan and Duane Hoff, who have created a place for seasoned wine connoisseurs in search of luxury wine experiences. Tasting experiences here are intimate and personalized, and include samples of Fantesca’s premium, small-production, award-winning wines in a stunning setting that includes a 300-foot Spring Mountain cave and sprawling vineyard views.

Lastly, be sure to check out Faust Haus, the dramatic former farmhouse and Prohibition Era cellar, where you will enjoy age-worthy and terroir-driven wines in a gothic fairy tale setting.
